Hydro-Quebec chooses new equipment to upgrade 300-site nationwide network

MAHWAH, N.J., Oct. 29, 2001 — RAD Data Communications announced today that the electric power utility Hydro-Quebec has chosen its products for inclusion in its telecommunications network.

Through authorized RAD reseller Comlink Systems (a division of Cygnal Technologies Limited), Hydro-Quebec has agreed to purchase RAD equipment over the next 3 years. This includes fiber optic solutions from RAD’s Megaplex, Kilomux, and DXC product families.

The RAD equipment will be a key component in a network-wide upgrade project to take place at over 300 sites in the Hydro-Quebec telecommunications network.

RAD’s equipment will be integrated into the Hydro-Quebec network for a variety of applications, including tele-protection and automation. This network will also be used to transport telephony, data and Internet traffic to the power plants, substations and offices in isolated regions throughout the province.

“Going into this project, we made it clear that the vendors and suppliers we selected must help us achieve our goals of implementing this equipment in service-critical areas while minimizing service interruptions and offering our clients a higher level of service,” said Pierre Chenevert, Director of Planning and Installation of Hydro-Quebec’s technological infrastructure. “We put RAD’s products through extensive evaluation testing, and they performed flawlessly while exceeding our stringent quality and reliability requirements.”

“In addition to the unquestionable quality and reliability of their products, what sets RAD apart from the competition is its unfaltering ability to remain diversified,” said Darin Gibbons, Director of Sales for Comlink’s Utility/Private Networks Group. “While many other vendors seem to be abandoning TDM and low speed technologies, RAD continues to be active in this space, garnering significant leadership. At the same time, RAD consistently introduces products based on new, high-speed technologies, such as IP and ATM. This unique approach to technology investment really distinguishes the company.”

The diversity of RAD’s product line was a key factor in the decision process. Said Chenevert, “I believe RAD’s greatest asset is the flexibility and wide range of options of their product portfolio. With RAD, we have a single vendor who can provide many different solutions to our network needs.”
