Cooper Power Systems substation gateway IEC certified for smart grid monitoring

The SMP 16 substation gateway from Cooper Power Systems, a division of power management company Eaton, won certification for International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850 interoperability, from DNV KEMA, a certification organization for IEC protocols.

The certification follows testing at KEMA Protocol Competence and Test Center in Arnhem, Netherlands, and verifies that the SMP 16 meets the IEC 61850 requirements as defined by the Utility Communications Architecture (UCA) International Users Group.

In 2005, the SMP 16 was one of the first communication gateways in the electrical industry to successfully implement IEC 61850. Since that time, Cooper Power Systems has completed multiple substation and distribution automation projects with various utilities and industrial companies, demonstrating interoperability with IEC 61850 Intelligent Electronic Devices from different manufacturers.
