Exelon abandons plans to upgrade nuclear power plants

Chicago-based energy producer Exelon Corp. is canceling its plans to upgrade a pair of nuclear power plants, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Exelon had planned uprates at five of its nuclear power plants that would have netted an additional 1,500 MW of power generation by 2017, according to Power Engineering.

The company is abandoning plans to expand production at the LaSalle plant in Illinois and the Limerick power plant in Pennsylvania because of low power prices and slow electricity demand growth, according to the report. The company said that it would take a $100 million charge in the second quarter if it continued with the projects.
