SCE will lay off 600 nuclear plant workers at SONGS

Southern California Edison (SCE) will be eliminating 600 non-union jobs at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) this summer. The plant workers will be laid off in a little over 60 days.

SCE, a unit of Edison International, said it will work with the Utility Workers Union of America and the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers on transition plans for union employees.

SCE announced earlier in June that the plant would be permanently shut down. The plant has been down since January 2012 after premature wear was found in tubes that carry radioactive water.
