Manmade lagoons could produce tidal power in U.K.

Tidal Lagoon Power is pitching a plan to build manmade lagoons with tidal power generation capacity in the U.K.’s Swansea Bay in the Severn Estuary. The plan is scalable up to $1 billion and could generate enough renewable energy to power 120,000 average U.K. homes by 2018.

The lagoons would be created by building a six-mile wall around the bay to create a differential in water levels as the tide goes in and out. A system of large tidal power turbines would generate renewable energy for about 14 to 16 hours per day.

Putting projects around the coast where tides occur at different times would deliver power around the clock, according to Tidal Lagoon Power.

A series of lagoons, which would last more than 100 years, could provide 10 percent of the U.K.’s baseload electricity requirement. Construction would generate 3,000 jobs, with up to 40 long-term operation jobs and as many in recreation roles.
