PPL Corp. units seek OK to build gas plant, solar facility

Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas and Electric, both units of PPL Corp., are asking Kentucky regulators for approval to build a 700 MW natural gas-fired power plant as well as a solar power project to replace retiring coal-fired capacity.

The new combined-cycle natural gas plant would be built at PPL‘s Green River facility. It would carry a price tag of about $700 million.

The solar power project would cost about $25 million and generate about 10 MW of renewable energy. The utilities are looking at several sites for this project.

The gas plant, assuming regulatory approval, could be brought into service in 2018. The solar power facility could come online in 2016.
