July 11, 2003 — FirstEnergy Corp. announced that Senior Vice President of Energy Delivery and Customer Service Earl T. Carey will retire, effective September 1, 2003, following 41 years of service. Carey will be succeeded by Charles E. Jones, regional vice president of Energy Delivery Operations.
“Earl’s commitment to providing customers with high-quality service has been a key to our company’s growth and success,” said Company Chairman and Chief Executive Officer H. Peter Burg. “Earl has always operated with the premise that we must maintain our focus on customers in every aspect of our regional operations, from meter reading and billing to service restoration and safety for our 4.4 million customers.
“I am confident that we will have a smooth transition under Chuck’s leadership. With 25 years of service in the energy delivery business, Chuck brings a tremendous level of experience and expertise to the job,” Burg said.
Carey joined Ohio Edison Company in 1962. After serving in numerous management positions in regional operations and customer service, he was named vice president of Regional Operations/Customer Service in 1995. In 1997, he was named vice president of Distribution and Customer Service for FirstEnergy, which was formed through the merger of Ohio Edison and the former Centerior Energy Corporation. He was elected to his current position in 2001. He also serves as president of FirstEnergy’s subsidiary, Jersey Central Power & Light, a responsibility that will be assumed by Jones.
Carey attended Kent State University and The University of Akron, majoring in business. He is a 1989 graduate of the Public Utility Executive Program at the University of Michigan.
Carey is a past president of The Great Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America and serves on the board of The Ohio Chamber of Commerce; the Executive Committee of the Greater Akron Chamber; the advisory board of the Akron Salvation Army; and the board of The University of Akron’s Center for Economic Education. He also serves on the Edison Electric Institute’s Executive Advisory Committee for Customer and Energy Services and is a member of the Marketing Executive’s Conference. Carey was a member of Leadership Akron’s Class XIII.
Jones began his career with Ohio Edison as a substation engineer in 1978. He held a variety of positions in the Akron, Marion, and Elyria areas, and in 1995 was named president of Ohio Edison’s Penn Power subsidiary, based in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He returned to Akron in 1996 as division manager.
In 1997, Jones was named president of FirstEnergy’s Northern Ohio Region. He was promoted to his current position in 2001.
Jones received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from The University of Akron. He also attended the United States Naval Academy for two years and was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Jones serves on the board of the Greater Cleveland Growth Association, City of Akron’s Workforce Initiative, Cascade Locks Park Association, and Great Lakes Innovation and Development Enterprise. Jones also served on the boards of the Cuyahoga County chapter of the American Red Cross, United Way Services, Youth Opportunities Unlimited and Cleveland Initiative for Education, and the Cleveland Tomorrow Deputy Board.
