Biomass power plant could be sited at Vermont Yankee nuclear plant

As part of the decommissioning of Entergy‘s Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, a biomass power plant could be built on the site.

The nuclear plant is set to shut down at the end of 2014. In exchange for the approval to operate the plant through the end of this year, Entergy must pay the state for economic development, renewable energy projects and pay into a special decommissioning fund.

The biomass plant is still in the early stages of planning, and state officials plan to organize a public forum to discuss the details, according to The biomass plant could potentially use woody and agricultural biomass and certain municipal solid waste.
