Energy storage firm Beacon Power hires chief commercial officer

Grid-scale flywheel energy storage firm Beacon Power LLC hired Jim Brown as its chief commercial officer. Brown brings more than 20 years of energy industry experience, most recently as executive vice president of business development and president of global utility systems at renewable energy developer First Solar.

While at First Solar, Brown oversaw expansion of its business. Earlier in his career, Brown worked in project and structured finance at Chase Manhattan, Société Générale, WestLB AG and HSBC, specializing in the power and energy sectors.

Brown’s responsibilities at Beacon Power will include all areas of product commercialization and business development, including sales and marketing strategy and execution.

Beacon Power provides flywheel-based energy storage solutions for large-scale grid-connected facilities and smaller microgrid and distributed off-grid applications. Services include frequency regulation, voltage support and integrating renewable energy resources.

The company has the largest composite flywheel in commercial operation at 25 kWh, and the largest operational grid-tied flywheel energy storage facility at 20 MW, located in Stephentown, NY. Beacon’s headquarters and manufacturing facility are in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts.
