Fermata Energy receives UL certification for electric vehicle charging system

UL, a safety science company, announced that Fermata Energy’s bidirectional electric vehicle (EV) charging system is the first to be certified to the North American safety standard, UL 9741.

The UL 9741 standard covers bidirectional EV charging equipment that charges EVs from an electric power system (EPS). It can export power from an EV to an EPS as well.

Bidirectional chargers are built for EVs to hold electricity in the vehicle, as well as provide energy back to the grid. This enables EVs to earn money when they are parked and help stabilize the electric power grid.

Francisco Martinez, business development director of UL’s Energy Systems and eMobility division, says that bidirectional charging gives vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology the potential to balance electricity demand and smooth consumption spikes with the help of electric car battery storage.

Fermata’s V2G technology uses bidirectional charging to transform EVs to sources of energy. The company projects that EVs will then be a solution to renewable energy storage needs as well as a chance to lower total ownership cost of EVs.
