First Solar to supply PV modules for solar power projects in Australia

First Solar will supply its thin-film solar photovoltaic (PV) modules for two utility-scale projects owned by AGL Energy Limited. First Solar is the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the projects and will provide maintenance support for five years.

AGL Energy’s projects include the 102 MW Nyngan solar power project and a 53 MW solar energy project at Broken Hill, both located in New South Wales, Australia, according to Power Engineering.

Both projects are supported by $166.7 million of Commonwealth Government funding through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency as well as an additional $64.9 million in funding from the NSW government. Total project costs are $450 million.

Construction on the Nyngan project is expected to begin in January 2014, while construction on the Broken Hill project is scheduled to start the following July. Both projects will be commissioned by 2015.
