Hydropower, wind, solar output rising on Chile SIC power grid

Power generation on Chile‘s central SIC grid totaled 4.44 terawatt-hours in October, up 3.6 percent on same-month last year, operator CDEC-SIC announced.

Hydropower accounted for 58.6 percent, up from 45.9 percent last year, according to Business News Americas.

Thermo generators’ contribution dropped to 37.2 percent from 52.9 percent. Wind energy output nearly tripled to 141 GWh, while solar power grew to 44 GWh from zero.

Wind and solar together accounted for 4.2 percent of total generation in the month.

Endesa led generators in terms of output, producing 1.63 TWh, according to data gathered by local bank Banco Bice. This figure was down 12.3 percent year-on-year, while Colbàƒºn increased generation 17.1 percent to 985 GWh.

Marginal costs on the SIC increased 7.8 percent to $76.80/MWh.

The metrics follow CDEC-SIC’s release of a series of recommended works totaling around $189 million to improve and expand the grid’s trunk line system.

The projects have a total estimated cost of around $189 million, and were recommended as part of CDEC-SIC’s annual trunk line transmission study.
