Prime minister-elect of India, Narendra Modi, who won a landslide victory in last week’s elections, wants to bring solar power into every home in India by the year 2019.
Calling solar power a technology with the power to transform India, Modi, who will be sworn in May 26, 2014, said every residence in India should have enough solar power in it to power at least one light bulb, according to his plan.
In India, some 400 million people lack reliable access to electric power. Outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government fell short of its goal to provide every house in India with power by 2012.
Investing in power generation will be a top priority for the new government, and Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has championed solar energy in particular. Modi himself designed India’s government incentives for utility-scale solar power facilities in 2009.
