Mortenson expands renewable energy business in Canada

Minneapolis, November 1, 2010 — With four wind power projects currently under construction throughout Canada, Mortenson Canada is expanding its operations with the opening of a new office dedicated to renewable energy construction projects and services in Canada.

The firm will open the new office in Mississauga, Ontario in December 2010. The office opening comes as Mortenson launches the construction of its fifth wind power project this year near Lake St. Clair.

Mortenson’s new office will be dedicated to developing its renewable energy business throughout Canada. It will work closely with Mortenson’s U.S.-based Renewable Energy Groups.

Jason Miranowski, director of operations at Mortenson, will play a key role in the day-to-day operations of the new office. Miranowski has more than 15 years experience in civil and industrial construction.

In Canada, Mortenson has erected (including wind projects currently under construction) 328 wind turbines, generating 687.2 MW of wind power. Mortenson completed its first wind power project in Canada in 2006 when it completed the Prince I and II Wind Power Project near Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

The company’s latest wind power project is the Comber Wind Project, which will be built near Lakeshore, Ont., located south of Lake St. Clair. Mortenson will begin construction in November 2010 on a new 165.6-MW wind power facility for Canadian-based developer, Brookfield Renewable Power.

The Comber Wind Project is being built right next to the Gosfield Wind Project, which Mortenson recently completed in September. For this project, Mortenson is erecting 72 Siemens 2.3-MW turbines for a total projected output of 165.6 MW, which will provide electricity to more than 21,500 households.

Other wind power construction projects currently being constructed or recently constructed by Mortenson in Canada, include:

Gosfield Wind Project — Mortenson recently completed the construction of a 50-MW wind power facility for Brookfield Renewable Power. The Gosfield Wind Project is located in southwestern Ontario, an agricultural region often referred to as the Canadian “Banana Belt.” For this project, Mortenson erected 22 Siemens 2.3-MW wind turbines. Construction began in January 2010 and was completed in September 2010.

Dokie Wind Project — Selected by GE Energy Financial Services and Plutonic Power Corp., Mortenson is providing engineering, procurement and construction for the first phase of the Dokie Wind Project in Chetwynd, British Columbia, located about 1,100 km north of Vancouver, B.C. Mortenson is erecting 48 Vestas 3 MW wind turbines, which will provide 144 MW of renewable power to the region, which will be purchased by BC Hydro. The Dokie Wind Project is scheduled for completion by December 2010.

St. Joseph Wind Farm — Mortenson is building the 138-MW St. Joseph Wind Farm near Montcalm, Manitoba, about 24 kilometers north of the Minnesota-Manitoba border. Selected by Pattern Energy Group and BowArk Energy to provide engineering, procurement and construction, Mortenson will erect 60 Siemens 2.3-MW wind turbines for the St. Joseph Wind Farm, which is expected to become operational by December 2010.

Glen Dhu Wind Project — Selected by Shear Wind, Mortenson is constructing the 62-MW Glen Dhu Wind Project. Located in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, the wind project consists of 27 Enercon 2.3-MW turbines. This facility is expected to be complete in March 2011.
