NRG Energy building solar projects for Starwood hotels

Several new hotel properties in the U.S. Virgin Islands will produce solar energy because of an agreement between NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG) and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc.

Starwood Hotels is teaming up with NRG Energy to build solar arrays at Starwood properties globally.

Three properties will use renewable energy, including a 1.3 MW solar array planned for the Westin St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. NRG will build, own and operate the project, while Starwood will purchase the electricity through multi-year power purchase agreements.

The arrays will help to reduce local air emissions and cut down the amount of diesel fuel imported to the island, the companies said in a release.
