HOUSTON, June 2, 2003 — The Maryland Public Service Commission has granted Reliant Energy Solutions East LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliant Resources, Inc., a license to provide electric service to large commercial, industrial and institutional clients in the state.
“We are extremely pleased that the Maryland Public Service Commission has found we meet the standards for licensing in the state,” said Jim Ajello, president of Reliant Energy Solutions. “Our focus initially will be serving clients with a peak demand of 1.5 megawatts and monthly electric bills of $50,000 or more in Baltimore. However, we plan to expand into the rest of Maryland in 2005 as market rules designed to encourage competition go into effect in the rest of the state.”
“We believe that competition ensures the lowest possible commodity prices, better service and a variety of innovative products and services,” said Ajello. “We are looking forward to bringing the added value of a fully competitive marketplace to large companies and institutions in Baltimore and ultimately the rest of Maryland.”
Reliant Energy Solutions, an affiliate of Reliant Energy Solutions East, serves approximately 35 percent of the industrial and large commercial load in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. In March, Reliant Energy Solutions East was granted a license to provide electric service in New Jersey and it recently opened an office to serve as the headquarters of its East Coast operations in Edison, New Jersey.
Reliant Energy Solutions’ parent company, Reliant Resources, already has a significant presence in the Northeast with approximately 5,600 megawatts of power generation assets in the PJM Interconnection.
Reliant Resources, Inc., based in Houston, Texas, provides electricity and energy services to retail and wholesale customers in the U.S. and Europe, marketing those services under the Reliant Energy brand name. The company provides a complete suite of energy products and services to approximately 1.7 million electricity customers in Texas ranging from residences and small businesses to large commercial, industrial and institutional customers.
Its wholesale business includes approximately 22,000 megawatts of power generation capacity in operation, under construction or under contract in the U.S. The company also has nearly 3,500 megawatts of power generation in operation in Western Europe.
