SatCon obtains $1.0 million order for industrial UPS system

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 1, 2001 — SatCon Technology Corporation® today announced it has received a $1.0 million order for its StarSine MegaPower UPS (uninterruptible power supply) system.

The MegaPower UPS system combines SatCon power converters, controls and flywheel with a diesel generator to provide 2.0MW of uninterruptible power during voltage sags, surges, brownouts or blackouts.

“We introduced the StarSine MegaPower UPS system in January 2001 and have worked diligently to secure our first order by the end of the calendar year and anticipate delivering these systems by the end of the second quarter of 2002,” said David Eisenhaure, SatCon president and chief executive officer. “With businesses becoming more dependent on electricity to manage everything from data processing to automated manufacturing, we believe that there is a growing need for SatCon’s unique UPS system to manage power during power outages.” Eisenhaure said the current market for UPS systems is estimated at about $6.0 billion a year and expected to grow to $11.0 billion by 2005. The specific market for UPS systems providing greater than 1.0MW of power is estimated to be about $500 million annually.

“This initial product targets the higher power end of the market and is designed to provide emergency power for an entire facility until a generator can be started to replace the lost utility power,” Eisenhaure noted. “The StarSine MegaPower UPS is one of SatCon’s family of UPS and power quality products that includes power converters and controllers for distributed power generation that can work with fuel cells, microturbines, wind turbines and solar arrays. The SatCon family of products also includes motors, controllers, drive trains for alternative fuel vehicles and our recently introduced Smart Predictive Line Controller that allows industries to operate on-site power generation more efficiently creating excess capacity that can be sold back to the utility grid.”

SatCon’s UPS systems range in power from 250 kW to the higher power systems at 1.7 to 2.2 megawatts. The higher power systems are available in 480 volt or 4160 volt configurations and range in price from $1.0 to $1.75 million depending upon the options selected.
