Prairie du Chien, WI, June 13, 2003 – Cabela’s has received the Orion Environmental Stewardship Award for its installation of 2,129 energy efficient lighting fixtures manufactured by Orion Energy Systems, in its Prairie du Chien distribution center.
By doing so, Cabela’s is conserving 4.05 million kilowatt hours (kWh) per year and 81 million kWh over the lifetime of the Orion fixture. This energy savings will now be available to provide power to approximately 500 hundred homes in the Prairie du Chien area. The Cabela’s facility expects the lighting retro-fit project to pay for itself in two years through its energy savings.
When it completed a 1 million square foot energy efficient lighting project, Cabela’s was able to measure a 36% increase in light while using 61% less energy.
Cabela’s, a provider of hunting, fishing, and outdoor gear, will reduce demand by almost a 1/2 Megawatt, which will have a significant impact on Prairie du Chien and Wisconsin. Using the EPA formula, carbon dioxide, a green house gas which is linked to global warming, will be reduced by 60,750 tons; carbon emissions will be reduced by 16,567 tons, sulfur dioxide, which is related to acid rain, is reduced by 223 tons; nitrogen oxide, is a another greenhouse gas, which has an effect on acid rain and smog, is reduced by 518 tons; and, mercury is reduced by 9 pounds.
“We tested six different light fixtures and the Orion fixture gave the most bang for the buck, including a large positive environmental impact, ” stated Jason Knapp, Catalog Fulfillment Manage of Cabela’s. “With Cabela’s being such an outdoor company, we are always looking to do projects that are environmentally sound, so receiving this Environmental Stewardship Award completes the virtuous circle.”
“I congratulate Cabela’s on receiving this Environmental Stewardship Award,” said Neal Verfuerth, Orion’s president. “They deserve this award for making a significant contribution to Prairie du Chien’s environment by saving 81 million kWh. In addition, they have improved their workplace environment with better lighting, and they also have improved their bottom line.”
Orion’s Illuminator has earned several U.S. patents and recently won Wisconsin’s prestigious Spirit of Ecology Award. The lighting product provides a full-spectrum light while using far less energy than standard fixtures. Full spectrum lighting is the equivalent of sunlight at high noon and is used for Seasonal Adjustive Disorder (SAD) treatment.
“Everyone here is delighted that our new lighting helps the environment,” said Jason Knapp. “We’ve had a very positive response from our employees coupled with great bottom line results.”
