Navigant Consulting and Sapient partner to provide business and technology services to the energy industry

CHICAGO and CAMBRIDGE, MASS., May 13, 2003 — Navigant Consulting Inc., a specialized independent consulting firm, and Sapient, a business and technology consultancy, have formed a global alliance to help energy clients achieve bottom-line business improvement.

The partnership combines Navigant Consulting’s deep industry knowledge and experience in the electric and gas industries, with Sapient’s energy expertise and track record of helping clients achieve business results through the rapid application and support of industry-leading technology solutions on a fixed-price basis.

Energy companies have faced unprecedented levels of market change and have been besieged by corporate scandal and falling investor confidence. As the energy market tries to stabilize and build confidence through wholesale and retail market restructuring, companies will be required to aggressively strengthen their enterprises, based on a renewed focus on core businesses.

Navigant Consulting and Sapient have applied their collective industry, regulatory and technical expertise to develop targeted services to assist energy companies in quickly and cost-effectively meeting these market demands and achieving business results – such as lowering their enterprise risks and gaining greater performance and value from their assets.

“Over the next several years, the energy market will continue to be complex and uncertain – and energy companies will be facing difficult business and technology decisions,” said Alan Herrick, executive vice president and managing director of Sapient’s energy services industry group. “By working with Navigant Consulting, we will offer clients new ideas, based on years of experience, along with a shared accountability to help clients define and achieve business results. Navigant Consulting brings an unparalleled strategic and operational understanding of the complexities of the deregulating energy industry.”

According to Joel L. Singer, chief executive officer of Navigant Consulting’s energy practice: “We chose Sapient as our partner for two reasons: First, Sapient is an innovative global leader in information technology solutions and is well recognized for its successful approaches. Second, the Sapient team has demonstrated a strong commitment to work with us to develop unique offerings that address the specific challenges our clients face in the deregulating energy industry. Through this partnership, we can now offer our energy clients a significantly broader suite of consulting services.”

The initial set of targeted services that Sapient and Navigant Consulting have developed to help energy companies include:

* Asset Optimization: Solutions to create the most value from their existing assets in order to increase financial performance.

* Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM): Solutions that focus on improving trading operations, with emphasis on strengthening corporate risk management processes and systems, to mitigate enterprise-wide risk.

* Regional Power Market Design: Services to support the formation of efficient market systems, consistent with FERC’s long-term directions for standard market design.

Working together, Sapient and Navigant Consulting have already begun to serve several leading utilities in North America, and have joint discussions underway with utilities and energy companies in Europe. Recent successes include assisting one of the largest utilities in North America to restructure its energy procurement and risk management organizations and systems, and preparing to help a large electric independent system operator to develop its operating and regulatory structure along with the necessary information support systems.
