Reliant Energy marks electric competition milestone

More than 125,000 Texas customers now with Reliant outside of Houston

HOUSTON, Aug. 1, 2003 — Reliant Energy has achieved an important milestone by surpassing the 125,000 mark in new residential electricity customers outside its traditional service area. These customers join the 1.6 million electricity customers Reliant serves in greater Houston.

“We’re proud of Reliant’s reputation for savings and service, and glad to be able to provide these benefits to such a large number of customers outside our traditional market,” said Brian Landrum, president of Reliant Energy Retail Services. Full electric competition went into effect on January 1, 2002, in most parts of the state. Since last summer, the company has been attracting new customers in areas that are open to competition by offering savings and service.

“Summer’s heat is upon us, and people are looking for relief from high electric bills and our price provides meaningful savings. In fact, we’ve saved our customers millions of dollars,” continues Landrum. “Because of deregulation, we’re seeing thousands of customers every week choose Reliant as their new electricity provider.”

Reliant Energy offers customers outside its traditional service area a variety of electric plans to suit different customer needs. For customers seeking value, Reliant’s Better Savings plan offers a discount off the price to beat in a given territory, allowing customers to save money regardless of their usage. Reliant’s Renewable Plan features electricity generated by environmentally friendly wind power.

Reliant also offers customer service 24 hours a day, seven days a week and extensive Spanish language services. In addition to Spanish language customer support and sign-up information, the company offers a Spanish language Web site with comprehensive energy savings information in Spanish and provides monthly billing materials in Spanish, upon request. “Texans across the state are embracing the right to choose their electric provider,” said Landrum. “By offering the savings and customer service Texans want, Reliant has received a very favorable reception from the increasing number of people who recognize the benefits of electric competition.”
