77 MW Puerto Rico biomass plant advances

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved an air permit for the construction and operation of a 77 MW solid waste facility in Puerto Rico. The biomass power plant will be situated at the former site of the Global Fibers Paper Mill.

The permit requires plant owner Energy Answers Arecibo LLC to use the best available control technology to reduce emissions, along with performance tests, some continuous emissions monitoring and other monitoring requirements, according to Power Engineering.

Energy Answers will also finance the installation of a second monitor in the community to collect data on lead emissions.
