California ISO approves 300 MW Beltran solar power project

Centauri Energy, LLC won approval from the California Independent System Operation (California ISO) to secure a queue position for Beltran Solar, the company’s 300 MW solar power project in Stanislaus County, California.

The queue position will allow Beltran Solar to interconnect with the California‘s power grid.

At 300 MW, Beltran Solar represents one of the largest solar projects under way in California. It spans about 1,600 acres near Interstate 5, and is located about an hour southeast of the San Francisco Bay Area. Beltran Solar will be built in three phases, with the first phase slated to deliver power in 2016 and 2017.

Historically, the Beltran Solar land was used for nut farming operations (primarily almond and walnut) and other agricultural products. The operation relied heavily on an annual water allocation from the California Aqueduct. The ongoing legislated water cutbacks have severely reduced the property’s water allocation.

There is insufficient water to cultivate a vast portion of the site, which has rendered the land fallow. Much of the land consists of bare ground subject to frequent discing.

The Beltran Solar project will use the least agriculturally productive land in the area and will not conflict with surrounding uses, including agriculture.

Centauri Energy, LLC is currently in development of wind projects in key U.S. locations, including New Mexico.
