Calvert Cliffs nuclear unit suddenly shuts down

Unit 2 at the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Maryland suddenly shut down late May 8. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) was notified on May 9.

The reactor automatically tripped around 9:47 p.m. EDT. The control rods fully inserted and all systems responded as designed. Plant operator Constellation is investigating what caused the trip.
