Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) President and CEO Seok Cho has been appointed to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) board of directors, EPRI announced.
Cho will fill an interim board seat until 2015 when he will be nominated to a full 4-year-term that would end in 2019.
At KHNP, he is responsible for company’s 23 nuclear reactors that supply 30 percent of Korea’s electricity needs. KHNP is the sole nuclear power operator in the country and is among the world’s largest nuclear power companies. It is building four nuclear power units in the United Arab Emirates, and as many as eight others are planned or are under construction in Korea.
Prior to his KHNP appointment, Cho served in various government posts, among them: Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy; CEO of the Korea Industrial Complex Corp.; Deputy Minister for Industry in the Ministry of Knowledge Economy; and Director General for Energy and Resources Policy in the Ministry of Commerce Industry and Energy.
“Dr. Cho’s deep knowledge of the nuclear industry will be an invaluable asset to our board as we focus our research activities on creating a less carbon-intensive generation portfolio,” said Mike Howard, president and CEO of EPRI.
