ERCOT CEO Trip Doggett to retire in 2016

Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) President and CEO H.B. “Trip” Doggett recently announced to the ERCOT board of directors that he will retire in 2016.

“It has been an honor to work with ERCOT employees, market participants and policymakers to continually evolve and improve the world-class electric market and grid operations we have in place today,” Doggett said. “I believe management and employees also have worked successfully to build ERCOT into a top-performing, well-respected company and a great place to work.”

Under Doggett’s leadership, ERCOT achieved operational excellence and created a culture of accountability, said Craven Crowell, ERCOT board chair.

“He has nurtured and developed a talented and innovative work force and a solid leadership team to accomplish ERCOT’s important mission,” Crowell said. “I appreciate his commitment to a smooth leadership transition.”

Doggett began work in the ERCOT market in 1998 as a consultant to Austin Energy during design of the rules for the zonal market. Beginning in 2000, he helped ERCOT as an independent consultant to build its zonal systems and begin nodal market design. He joined the ERCOT staff in 2008 as chief operating officer – overseeing system operations, system planning, market operations and compliance – and in 2010 was named president and CEO.

“Together with our stakeholders, ERCOT has been able to adapt effectively to changing needs and grid conditions,” Doggett said. “We have encouraged new technologies and improved efficiency, expanded demand response programs and enabled integration of more than 13,000 megawatts of wind generation capacity.”

Previously, Doggett worked 22 years with Duke Energy in the area of transmission substation engineering and was part of the team that launched the California ISO.

Crowell said the board will consider internal candidates to replace Doggett before determining whether to conduct an outside search.
