The U.S. Southeast, which was hard hit by Hurricane Matthew over the weekend, isn’t the only region dealing with major power outages as of Oct. 11.
Southern California Edison reported about 102,000 customers briefly lost power in Torrance, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Hawthorne, Westmont, Gardena, and South Los Angeles, according to the Department of Energy.
While the cause of the outage was not immediately known, the Edison International cited more than a dozen separate incidents related to the massive outage, which all started around 5:40 a.m. PDT, Tuesday. SCE said the majority of outages were restored by 7:30 a.m. PDT, DOE reported in a regular update.
As of 3:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday, 34,874 customers remained without power. Most of the outages were caused by trees and branches falling on to power line, the utility said. The majority of customers in the western and central regions of the province who lost power will be restored by late Tuesday.
Due to flood waters and inaccessible roads, the damage in many areas in the eastern part of the province has been difficult to assess, NS Power said. As field crews assess the damage, some estimated restoration times in the area will need to change. The majority of customers in the east and Cape Breton will have power restored by 10:00 a.m. EDT Thursday, Oct. 13.
As for Hurricane Matthew, restoration efforts across the southeastern U.S. Atlantic coastline are underway and damage to electrical infrastructure continues to be assessed as crews are able to reach hard-hit and remote areas.
As of late Monday, Oct. 10, flooding resulting from levy and dam breeches have hindered restoration efforts in portions of North Carolina. Restoration crews are being rerouted from Florida and sent to Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. About 1.2 million customer outages remain along the coastline from Florida to Virginia.
