Westinghouse will submit its 225 MW pressurized water reactor SMR design, in which all primary components are located inside the reactor vessel. The firm’s SMR builds on the passive safety systems, components and modular construction techniques currently licensed and in use in its popular AP1000 nuclear power plant design.
According to Westinghouse, the AP1000 is the “first and only Generation III+ reactor to receive design certification from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The AP1000 is currently under construction in China and is the basis China’s own indigenous CAP1000 reactor.
Westinghouse competed unsuccessfully for the last round of SMR funding, which was won by Babcock & Wilcox (NYSE: BWC) with its mPower design.
