After shutdown, Plant Farley Unit 1 returns to service

Unit No. 1 at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Generating Station resumed electricity production June 14 at 2:47 a.m. Central following an automatic shutdown.

Plant Farley is a dual-unit nuclear power plant operated by Alabama Power, a unit of Southern Co. It is located in Dothan, Alabama and can generate 1,820 MW.

On June 11 at 9:05 p.m. CT, Plant Farley’s unit 1 reactor automatically shut down when a lightning arrestor failed on a transformer. All Plant Farley safety systems operated as designed and expected.

All three of the transformers’ lightning arrestors were replaced, and power technicians performed testing to assure the health of the transformer. Plant Farley unit 1 was returned to service safely and without incident.

Plant Farley unit 2 continues to operate at 100 percent power.
