Bechtel replace steam generator at FirstEnergy nuclear plant

Frederick, Md., October 27, 2009 – Bechtel Power Corp. won a contract to provide engineering, procurement and construction services for replacing the two once-through steam generators and the reactor vessel closure head at Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio.

Operated by FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co., Davis-Besse is a pressurized water reactor producing 908 MW of electricity, enough to power 450,000 homes.

The replacement once-through steam generators for Davis-Besse are each about 74 feet tall, 12 feet in diameter and weigh 550 tons. They will be installed during the scheduled refueling outage in early 2014. Bechtel will mobilize in excess of 500 people to support the replacement project.

Bechtel was the original Architect Engineer for Davis-Besse when the plant was constructed in the 1970s. Bechtel also performed the Davis-Besse head replacement in 2002 and the Beaver Valley Unit 1 steam generator replacement in 2006.

Since its founding in 1898, Bechtel has worked on more than 22,000 projects in 140 countries on all seven continents.
