Black & Veatch and MRC Rail Services form fuel, transportation solution alliance

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Dec. 11, 2001 – Black & Veatch announced today its business collaboration with MRC Rail Services, an affiliate of Mitsui & Co., Ltd., to provide integrated fuel and transportation solutions to electric utilities and power producers.

Within this alliance Black & Veatch and MRC will integrate day-to-day fuel purchasing, delivery tracking and upfront fuel strategy planning. This will provide utilities with the ability to generate and execute the least-cost fuel and transportation plan in a seamless process that optimizes fuel strategies, minimizes generation costs and maximizes the efficiency and utilization of the available transportation network.

This comprehensive offering covers fuel strategy development, optimized planning, purchasing and scheduling, shipment monitoring, fleet management, inventory utilization, accounting and transaction processing in a flexible system that meets the needs of both large and small clients, available either as an Internet-based service or as tracking services combined with installed software.

“By combining MRC’s OnTrax with Black & Veatch’s FuelPro and Total Fuel Management software, we are able to deliver a complete, integrated and Internet-friendly solution to manage day-to-day fuel and transportation planning, scheduling, tracking and contract management functions,” said Black & Veatch Energy Services Vice President Scott Stallard. “This integrated system allows us to build on the proven strengths of our existing product lines to help the customer efficiently assess and optimize fuel and transportation options, manage logistics, and back end accounting functions within a distributed computing environment.”

Stallard continued, “Our tools can be integrated with existing systems, automate repetitive processes and replace outdated systems or processes. The result is the solution that is best for each client.”

MRC Rail Services President Mitch Nose said, “MRC and Black & Veatch are offering a fuel delivery model that allows electric utilities and power producers to minimize the cost of generating electricity. It covers all aspects of the fuel purchase decision from coal chemistry at the minemouth to payment of invoices based on ‘as-received’ coal. The Web-enabled set of decision tools allows dynamic monitoring of actual results vs. a predetermined plan. When utilized together, the complementary Black & Veatch and MRC software products will offer opportunities for electric power producers to improve profitability.”
