CenterPoint Energy Minnegasco receives EPA award for emissions reduction program

MINNEAPOLIS, March 25, 2003 — CenterPoint Energy Minnegasco recently received a Certificate of Achievement from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its efforts to reduce methane emissions through the voluntary Natural Gas STAR Program. The award credits the company for aggressively reducing methane emissions and helping lead the way in reducing climate change impacts.

“Since 1997, we have documented methane emission reductions from unit operations and equipment leaks of more than 19 million cubic feet,” said Glenn Miller, manager of environmental programs. “We accomplished these significant reductions through the combined efforts of many employees and company departments and the introduction of best management practices. According to the EPA, our reductions alone are equivalent to removing 1,700 cars from the Nation’s highways for a year or planting 2,300 acres of trees.”
A participant since 1997, CenterPoint Energy Minnegasco is the only natural gas distribution company in Minnesota to join the STAR program.

The Natural Gas STAR Program is a voluntary partnership between EPA and the natural gas industry, focusing on using cost-effective technologies and practices to reduce emissions of methane. The program has more than 90 partner companies across all major natural gas industry sectors: production, processing, transmission, and distribution. It started in 1993 and since then has reduced methane emissions by 218 billion cubic feet.

Methane is a greenhouse gas and is the primary component of natural gas. It is second only to carbon dioxide as a contributor to global warming. Methane emissions occur if unburned natural gas is released into the atmosphere.

Headquartered in Minneapolis, CenterPoint Energy Minnegasco is Minnesota’s largest natural gas distribution company, serving more than 728,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in over 240 communities.
