Constellation Energy Nuclear hires fuel services provider for Nine Mile Point

Wilmington, N.C., May 26, 2011 Global Nuclear Fuel-Americas won a $300 million dollar contract from Baltimore, Md.-based Constellation Energy Nuclear Group to supply fuel and associated engineering reload licensing services to the utility’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in central New York.

Nine Mile Point is a two-unit, GE-designed boiling water reactor station located in the town of Scriba, N.Y. north of Syracuse. Combined, the nuclear station’s two units generate more than 1,750 MW, which is enough energy to meet the needs of more than 1 million households.

For the units 1 and 2 fuel reloads, GNF-A will supply fuel that is produced and assembled at the company’s Wilmington, N.C. fuel fabrication plant.

The fuel assemblies will be equipped with GNF’s Defender filter technology. This is an added safety feature that protects the fuel by capturing debris that may exist in a reactor core, thus helping to prevent damage to fuel rods.
