Mississippi Power retires coal-fired power plant

Mississippi Power, a unit of Southern Co. (NYSE: SO), has retired the 67.5 MW Plant Eaton in Petal, Miss.

The power plant first began operations in March 1945 and was used primarily for lights, radios and refrigeration. Since then, the number of Mississippi Power customers has increased more than four times to about 186,000, according to a company release.

The Kemper County integrated gasification combined-cycle power plant will help to replace the lost capacity. Kemper is expected to be completed in March 2014 and is currently 75 percent finished.
