New 7.4 magnitude earthquake strikes near Fukushima plant in Japan

April 7, 2011 — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a new 7.4 magnitude earthquake has struck off the north-central coast of Japan.

The earthquake hit about 73 miles from the site of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, where Tokyo Electric Power Co. workers are still struggling to contain the damage caused by the March 11 earthquakes and tsunami.

The Japan Metrological Agency issued a tsunami warning for a tsunami of as much as four feet. A tsunami advisory has been issued for parts of the coast further from the epicenter.
