Plant Vogtle Unit 3 construction moves forward

The Georgia Power project team at the Plant Vogtle site placed the CA20 module into the Unit 3 nuclear power island.

The module was assembled from prefabricated wall and floor sections and transported to the site by rail and truck. It was lifted into place using a 560-foot tall heavy lift derrick. It will house various power plant components, including the used fuel storage area.

The project has reached several milestones, including the placement of the CR10 module into the Unit 4 nuclear island.

Georgia Power, a unit of Southern Co., expects units 3 and 4 to begin commercial operations by the end of 2018. Both units are 1,100-MW Westinghouse AP1000 reactors.
