Siemens expands business with IT solutions for power plants

July 8, 2002 — Through its British regional company the Siemens Power Generation Group (PG) has acquired ICIS Technology Ltd., a provider of software solutions for market-oriented power plant management and power trading in Britain.

A corresponding contract was signed recently. ICIS Technology, with headquarters in Harrogate in northern England and a further location in Cirencester in the west of England, has a work force of 127 and posted sales totaling EUR17 million in the last fiscal year. The purchase price has not been disclosed.

ICIS provides software applications, systems and services for power producers. The acquisition of ICIS will give PG additional technological strength and significantly improve its position in the British energy market. The most important product provided by the British company is the “PANACeA” software system that monitors, evaluates and trades power. The software suite provides power producers with the ability to achieve optimum unit commitment in the power market.

ICIS Technology Ltd., as a unit within the Instrumentation & Controls Division of Siemens Power Generation, will primarily serve the British market but also support international marketing of ICIS products.

“The acquisition of ICIS explicitly supports the business goal of the I&C Division to become the world’s leading provider of information technology in the energy sector. Britain is leading the way in the development of a liberalized energy market and ICIS is a recognized provider of software solutions, that help power plant operators meet the chal-lenges posed by this market”, said Dr. Mathias Abbe, Head of Power IT Solutions at PG.

“ICIS products ideally complement our portfolio. Together with the products offered by other partners we now have a comprehensive range of solutions. We are thus able to offer our customers the best systems for profitable operation of their plants and for enhancement of their competitiveness.”

“We are delighted to be able to join forces with Siemens”, commented David Collier, Managing Director of ICIS. “ICIS has an impressive track record of growth and profitability. But to prosper further and take advantage of the deregulation in other markets as well as to increase our sales of additional software and associated IT services, it is imperative that we have the support of a major global player.”

The Instrumentation & Controls Division of PG is a major provider in the field of I&C and IT solutions for power plants. The Power Generation Group (PG) of Siemens AG is one of the premier companies in the international power generation sector. In fiscal 2001 (which ended September 30), Siemens PG posted sales amounting to EUR8.6 billion and received new orders totaling EUR12.2 billion. Earnings before interest, taxes and amortization (EBITA) amounted to EUR634 million. On September 30, 2001, Siemens PG had a workforce of around 26,500 around the world.
