The company closed the 22 MW Neil Simpson 1 plant, according to the Associated Press. The plant is one of five at the Wyodak Neil Simpson complex. Decommissioning of the unit will begin later this year and is scheduled to be finished by mid-2015.
Black Hills is currently building the $237 million, 132 MW Cheyenne Prairie Generating Station, a natural gas-fired plant scheduled to come online in October. The plant will replace 82 MW of coal-fired generation that will be retired by the end of March and a 40 MW power supply agreement that is ending in 2014.
The gas-fired plant will consist of a 37 MW simple-cycle combustion turbine owned by Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power and a 95 MW combined-cycle combustion turbine to be jointly owned by Black Hills and Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power.
