ABB joins Main.net’s subsidiary as shareholder and strategic partner for power line communications

Mannheim, Germany/Kfar Saba, Israel, Oct. 14, 2002 — Main.net Communications Ltd., a provider of power line communications (PLC) broadband access network solutions, announced that ABB has joined Power PLUS Communications (PPC) as shareholder and strategic partner.

PPC, a joint venture between Main.net and MVV Energie AG (a German multi-utility company), markets Main.net’s PLUSâ„- system solution in Germany and Austria. ABB’s subsidiary, ABB New Venture GmbH, has taken over 14 percent of PPC’s shares with cash and additional assets investments.

Under the agreement, ABB’s medium voltage coupler technology and patents that are now part of PPC’s assets, will be added to Main.net’s PLUSâ„- system solution for medium voltage power lines.

“As the world leader in energy and automation technology, we are excited about PLC,” said Dr. Joachim Schneider, CEO of ABB AG. “The current fully commercial high speed Internet over power lines is just the first step. Other applications for PLC are security services, telephony, power management and home networking.

“The ability to enable both multimedia applications for the end user and energy services for the power utilities will only speed up mass deployment. PLC is the only technology to enable local power utilities to generate additional income by using their existing electricity grid and customer base,” he said.

“We are proud to have the multinational ABB group as our strategic partner,” said Moshe Efrati, CEO of Main.net Communications Ltd.

“Main.net’s global market strategy consists of creating joint ventures and strategic partnerships with entities that have strong connections with local power utilities. ABB’s global market presence will enhance PPC’s dominance in the German and Austrian market and Main.net’s position as the global PLC technology leader.”
