Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution will lead a consortium to construct a third line over the Bosporous Strait. The new line, which will consist of freely suspended cables stretching more than a mile and weighing 250 tons, will also include a fiber-optic link for broadband telecommunications transmission. The 800 kV power line will transport up to 5,600 MW of electricity to Asia from generating plants located in Europe. Siemens completed the second power line over the Bosporous in 1983 (see photo) and will complete the third line by the summer of 1999 for the Turkish utility TEAS. The World Bank is financing the $30 million project.
