BGE DA System Wins Award
The Southeast Electric Exchange honored Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. (BGE) for its distribution automation (DA) system and its new Benfield substation. The utility received “Excellence in Engineering” awards at the Southeastern Electric Exchange Engineering and Operation Division`s recent meeting.
The DA system remotely controls pole-mounted switches that isolate line faults. BGE says the system prevented more than 37,000 customer outage hours in 1996 to approximately 100,000 customers. Response time was reduced from hours to minutes.
“BG&E has spent approximately $10 million improving reliability for rural residential customers throughout our service territory,” said Ralph Young, BGE senior engineer and project manager for the DA system. “We can`t eliminate all events that cause outages, but we can isolate the problems and quickly restore power to nearby customers.” Designed to reduce animal-related outages, the Benfield substation is the utility`s first totally enclosed suburban substation. Conductors are underground or enclosed.
