California compromise requires shouldering a bit of blame

April 5, 2001–When my father called to tell me he was once again going home for his annual vacation, I was worried–worried about his pocket book, worried about his temper, worried about what could happen to him. I told him to call me when he arrived and if he had any problems, as if he were traveling to a third world country and not two days by car to his childhood home.
