California firm is turning sunlight and water into hydrogen fuel

The company is commercializing a socially responsible technology that triggers algae to use the sun’s energy to extract hydrogen gas from water. Hydrogen – the simplest and most abundant element in the universe – can be used as fuel or converted into electricity. This new, landmark process has been called one of the 10 most important discoveries of the year 2000 by Popular Science magazine (January 2001).
