Coming Soon: Californians Choose Electricity Providers

The California Public Utilities Commission recently gave 32 million Californians the right to buy electricity and related services from the company of their choice. On Jan. 1, 1998, California consumers will be given the option to choose their electricity supplier, as well as the option to “unbundle” and choose their metering and billing services providers. Although customers may continue to purchase energy from their local electric company, they will have the choice of selecting the provider or providers who offer the best array of services at the best price.

This landmark decision does not call for a phase-in or pilot program in preparation for the open market. Rather, in just a few months the state`s electricity providers will go from a regulated monopoly to open competition in one big bang.
