Corning Sues FiberCore Inc. for Infringement of Optical Fiber Patent
Corning Inc. recently announced that it has filed suit against FiberCore Inc. for infringing one of Corning`s optical fiber patents. According to Corning, FiberCore Inc. has been using Corning`s U.S. Patent 4,339,173 to manufacture optical fiber and then sell that fiber in the United States. Corning filed suit in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts in Worcester, Massachusetts on January 6 and is seeking an injunction and unspecified damages.
“Corning has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in optical fiber research and development since we developed the first commercially viable fiber in the early 1970s,” said Dr. Robert VanDewoestine, Corning`s director of technology, telecommunications products division. “We are determined to protect this investment and future investments by asserting our patents and protecting our intellectual property wherever necessary.”
