DNP Users Group Adopts Testing Standards

At the DNP 3.0 Users Group annual meeting, held in San Diego in conjunction with DistribuTech `99, the assembled steering committee and members voted to adopt the DNP technical committee`s recommendations for Level 1 and Level 2 device testing. These test standards were developed over the past two years by the DNP 3.0 Technical Committee, a cross functional group of experts made up of electric utilities personnel, utility consultants and utility equipment suppliers.

This significant development has far reaching implications for all participants in the SCADA market. “Electric utility personnel now have an easy way to assure that DNP 3.0 has been properly implemented on an intelligent electronic device by requiring DNP verified devices in their request for quotations,” said Rick Murphy, First Energy Corp. and DNP Technical Committee chairman. “This will result in less time spent by utilities and vendors individually testing devices and trouble-shooting protocol implementations.” A newly created DNP verification committee will be responsible for managing various administrative issues such as supervising organizations which will provide independent testing services, the issuing of DNP verified certificates and establishing any associated fees.
