Electricity Shopping Program in Pennsylvanians` Future
Duquesne Light Co. customers could save $100 or more on their power bills next year if the electricity shopping plan approved by the Pennsylvania PUC goes into effect in January. Nearly 400,000 Duquesne customers will be able to shop for power in January, with the remaining 200,000 customers added to the mix by January 2000. Allegheny Power customers will also take part in a nearly identical shopping program. There are concerns that the plan could run into the same obstacles that suppliers faced in California–low profit margins. The PUC-approved plans are structured so that they should attract outside suppliers according to Enron, which offered power to 30,000 Duquesne Light customers under an ongoing pilot program. The Duquesne Light and Allegheny Power plans also greatly expand assistance to low-income customers.
