Elster Electricity announces new internal telephone modem (ITM3) for A3 ALPHS® and ALPHA Plus® meters

RALEIGH, N.C., May 25, 2005 — Elster Electricity, LLC announces the availability of the ITM3–a new internal telephone modem for the A3 ALPHA® and ALPHA Plus® meters. The ITM3 enables more relay outputs, telephone line sharing and dual port communications. In addition, the new modem provides outage reporting calls and a new modem chip set.

The A3 ALPHA and ALPHA Plus meters with ITM3 can be supplied with up to six relay outputs. The ITM3 has improved compatibility for modem-to-modem performance with other modems currently in use by our customers. When equipped with an optional battery, the ITM3 can make outage reporting calls. When installed on the A3 ALPHA meter, the ITM3 uses ANSI C12.21 protocol for outage reporting calls. When installed on the ALPHA Plus meter, the ITM3 uses Elster Electricity’s protocol for outage reporting calls.

By installing both the ITM3 and RS-485 option boards in either the A3 ALPHA or ALPHA Plus meter, a single phone line can be shared with up to 31 meters–without the need for any other external hardware. It is also possible to perform simultaneous communications to the A3 ALPHA meter using two independent communication ports by installing an RS-232 or RS-485 and an ITM3 under the meter’s cover.

“Internal telephone modems continue to be a reliable and very popular communication option on commercial and industrial meters,” stated Victor Sitton, ANSI product manager for Elster Electricity. “The new ITM3 comes with all the features of our ITM2 modem but with added enhancements including dual port communications and the ability to share one phone line with multiple meters–all under the meter’s cover.”

About the A3 ALPHA Meter

Elster Electricity’s A3 ALPHA meter builds upon the strengths of existing ALPHA meter designs. Like its predecessors, the A3 ALPHA meter uses Elster Electricity’s patented digital measurement techniques that offer high accuracy, repeatability, and low ownership costs. In support of open architecture standards, the A3 ALPHA meter is the first Elster Electricity meter with full ANSI C12.18, C12.19 and C12.21 communication protocol support. Other features include advanced four quadrant metering, transformer and line loss compensation, and interval data recording of instrumentation values.

About the ALPHA Plus Meter

Elster Electricity’s ALPHA Plus meter is a powerful meter that builds on the patented ALPHA metering technology. The ALPHA Plus meter can be a single phase, 240 volt, one-rate demand meter or a polyphase, wide voltage supply, multi-rate, real/reactive meter that validates meter service connections automatically, performs power quality monitoring, and provides load profile reading with remote communications.
