Energy cost management solution earns ABB Inc. a Frost & Sullivan award

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 28, 2002 — Frost & Sullivan has awarded ABB Inc. the 2001 Market Engineering Internet E-Commerce Innovation Award for its Energy Profiler Online (EPO), an energy cost management system.

Frost & Sullivan presented the award to ABB Inc. Thursday at the DistribuTECH 2002 conference in Miami Beach.

EPO provides electric and utility commercial and industrial (C&I) customers with load profiles, usage history charts, statistics for multiple locations and estimated bills in order to make cost effective energy choices. ABB hosts the entire web-based application so customers do not need additional staff, hardware or software.

The service is also used as a communications platform for managing load curtailment and real-time pricing programs. EPO is currently in use at over 20 utilities across North America.

According to new market information from Frost & Sullivan, E-commerce Strategies for Utilities, ABB is one of the first companies to bring this technology to market as a packaged product and is the market leader in the utility industry.

“ABB’s EPO system can be integrated with automated meter reading (AMR) devices to provide customers with real time consumption reporting, giving the company competitive advantage,” says Roberto Torres, Frost & Sullivan industry research manager. “The system is accessed through the utility’s web site, so it maintains control of the service, thus propelling the entity into a future market leadership position.”

“We’re very pleased to receive this award,” says Hisham Othman, ABB Vice President and General Manager of Business Management Systems. “We’ve had a great response from the market, and this award confirms our belief that providing customers with the means to manage energy costs is a recipe for success in the retail energy arena.”
