Energy users, producers salute House passage of comprehensive legislation

WASHINGTON, Aug. 2, 2001 – The following is a statement from Alliance spokesman Bruce Josten, Executive Vice President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, commenting on the House passage yesterday of the comprehensive energy bill by a vote of 240-189:

“Yesterday’s vote in the House finally gives Americans something they have urgently needed but up to now have lacked: a comprehensive energy policy. The House showed there is strong leadership to encourage farsighted efforts that will help secure our energy future.

“The vote also demonstrates there is a broad consensus for action to address the nation’s growing energy problems. From labor organizations to energy users and developers, Americans rallied in support of measures that will increase energy conservation and efficiency and supply from all sources.

“The House recognized the fundamental fact too often missing in the energy debate, that our economy and way of life ultimately depend on adequate supplies of affordable energy for households as well as businesses. Now we hope the Senate will soon demonstrate that it too understands the importance of a comprehensive energy plan for the country.”

The Alliance for Energy and Economic Growth represents more than 550 energy users, ranging from small, independent businesses to the nation’s largest manufacturers, as well as companies that generate and distribute energy from a diverse mix of sources – including natural gas, coal, oil and nuclear energy – supplying millions of households and workplaces.
