FirstEnergy selects Smallworld PowerOn software to manage electrical outages

ATLANTA, Ga., October 8, 2002 — FirstEnergy Corp. has selected the Smallworld PowerOn® software application from GE Network Solutions to manage electrical outages for its seven electric distribution companies.

After merging with GPU Inc. in November 2001, FirstEnergy decided to implement a single outage management system (OMS) throughout its electric operating subsidiaries. The former GPU had been using the Smallworld PowerOn software to manage outages since December 1999. GPU was one of the first customers to implement Smallworld PowerOn Remote Dispatch, a product that can be enabled during storms to dispatch work crews from remote service centers.

After an extensive evaluation and scalability test, FirstEnergy chose the OMS product from GE Network Solutions to implement company wide.

Henry Stueber, president of GE Network Solutions said, “We are pleased that FirstEnergy recognizes the value that the Smallworld PowerOn product has provided to GPU, and as a result, has decided to extend the Smallworld PowerOn software application to the rest of the company.”
